YCCC is pleased to announce Billy Susanto as the YCCC Student of the Year. Billy was chosen by YCCC faculty and staff because of his outstanding academic achievements and commitment to the college.
“This is such an honor.” said Susanto “I would not have been able to step outside of my comfort zone and be selected as the Student of the Year if it wasn’t for the people who supported me since day one.”
Susanto graduated from Somersworth High School in 2012 and worked full-time for 8 years at the Comcast Distribution Center and Agility as a machine operator before he enrolled at YCCC in 2018. Susanto will graduate from YCCC this May with a degree in computer science and will attend the University of Southern Maine this fall.
Susanto has been an active member of the college community serving as President of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a Presidential Student Ambassador, a member of the Student Senate, the Student Representative on the 2019 Presidential Search Committee, a Math Tutor in the Student Success Commons and playing for the 2019 Club Soccer team.
“Billy is an excellent student, a committed campus leader, and a thoughtful YC community member. Whenever I contacted Billy this year asking for his help with something, he always delivered.” said YCCC Dean of Student Jason Arey. “He is dependable, kind and generous with his time. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with Billy this year and know he will continue to make a positive impact at USM next year.”
Susanto was honored in a Virtual Celebration held by the Maine Community College System held on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 . In addition to being recognized as Student of the Year, Susanto will receive a John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award in the amount of $1,000. Mr. Lapoint was president of U.F. Strainrite in Lewiston and a trustee of the Maine Community College System. After his death in 1995, his widow, Jana Lapoint, served on the Board from 1995 to 2006 and helped establish the fund for the annual awards.
